Seventeen people received the Padma Bhushan in 1977, the first batch given after a two-year gap in 1978-79 preceding it in the calendar sequence. Hindustani vocalist Kumar Gandharva and musician Annapurna Devi featured in the arts category, alongside veena player K. S. Narayanaswamy. Neurosurgeon Balasubramaniam Ramamurthi and sociologist M. N. Srinivas represented medicine and science. Administrator Jagmohan, later a prominent Delhi and Kashmir governor, was also honored. No foreign nationals or posthumous awards appeared in this entirely India-based list of honorees.
The Padma Bhushan is the third-highest civilian award in the Republic of India, preceded by the Bharat Ratna and the Padma Vibhushan and followed by the Padma Shri. Instituted on 2 January 1954, the award is given for "distinguished service of a high order, without distinction of race, occupation, position or sex".
This Winners List features 17 winners of the Padma Bhushan Award 1977, in 1977.
