About Padma Bhushan Award 2003

India's Padma Bhushan list for 2003 named 32 recipients, one of the decade's largest cohorts. Notables include actor Naseeruddin Shah (cinema), ghazal singer Jagjit Singh (music), and nutrition scientist Coluthur Gopalan (medicine). The list drew unusually heavily on Tamil Nadu's Carnatic and dance traditions, honoring eight artists from that state alone. Two foreign nationals were honored for public affairs and science: Germany's Herbert Paul Fischer and Russian aerospace designer Herbert Alexandrovich Yefremov, reflecting India's engineering and diplomatic ties abroad that year.

The Padma Bhushan is the third-highest civilian award in the Republic of India, preceded by the Bharat Ratna and the Padma Vibhushan and followed by the Padma Shri. Instituted on 2 January 1954, the award is given for "distinguished service of a high order, without distinction of race, occupation, position or sex".
